Materials

Boot uppers are usually leather, synthetic materials or a combination of the two. Leather moulds to the foot shape and tends to be more comfortable. However, it stretches when wet, providing little protection. Advances in synthetics technology allow feet to "breathe," making such boots more comfortable and hence more popular.

Fit

Classic leather boots should be ½ a size smaller than the normal shoe size to allow for stretching. The important point is that the foot remains over the sole plate to allow for maximum traction. Synthetic boots stretch very little, so the normal shoe size is appropriate. In both cases, boots should be wide enough for comfort, while keeping the foot over the sole plate.

Stud Type

Boots with moulded studs give good traction and are more comfortable on firm pitches. Studs form part of the sole unit and therefore cannot be replaced. Boots with changeable studs are for softer ground, stud length being adjustable to suit playing conditions. Bladed boots are relatively new, having been around for approximately 10 years. However, bladed boots have come in for considerable criticism, with regard to injuries, both to the wearer and opponents. Thin blades can penetrate an opponent`s boot, with high risk of injury. The blades cut deep into the ground, allowing little give when turning, which can lead to injury for the wearer.

Popular models include the Nike Total 90 Shoot II boot. These have synthetic uppers for lightweight comfort. An off-centre lacing system provides a large strike zone. Cushioned and breathable, this entry level boot provides the technology of the T90 Laser without the prohibitive cost. The Adidas F50 is a top of the range boot, which is priced accordingly. However, its lightweight synthetic upper provides maximum comfort, while an innovative lace cover offers optimal fit with a larger kicking area.

Traditionally women footballers have worn men`s boots. However, given the increased demand from the women`s game, several models of women`s boot are now on the market.

Boot Care

Leather boots should have mud washed off and left to dry naturally. Leather can be kept waterproof and supple by using dubbin or polish. Synthetic boots can be rinsed off and left to dry naturally.
